01
Start with decisions, not components
Most design systems fail because they begin as a library of UI parts. The teams that keep theirs alive start with decisions: spacing rules, type scales, interaction states, and the language that describes them.
When those decisions are explicit, a redesign becomes a remapping exercise — not a rebuild. Tokens absorb the visual shift. Components stay structurally familiar.
02
Document the why, not only the what
A Figma kit without rationale is a snapshot. Pair every foundational token with a short note on when to use it and when not to.
That context is what lets a new designer contribute without fracturing the system six months later.
03
Plan for the first rewrite
Assume the brand will evolve. Keep visual values one layer above structure. If your button’s anatomy is locked to a specific radius and fill, you will pay for that rigidity twice.
Ship a system that can change its clothes without changing its bones.
